Outreach

Information about different career talks I have given these last years can be found in Talks, and below is information about outreach days I run annually at UIC.

The potential to inspire…

The Potential to Inspire: Sonia Kovalevsky’s Mathematical Journey is a poetic tale that takes us through the inspiring path of Sonia Kovalevsky, the first woman to receive a PhD and become a mathematics professor. Sonia Kovalevsky, who lived in the 19th century, became the first woman to obtain a doctorate in mathematics, the first woman appointed to a full professorship in Northern Europe, and one of the first women to work for a scientific journal as an editor. Sonia grew up in Russia, and her name was Со́фья Васи́льевна Ковале́вская, which translates into Sofia/Sofya Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya or Sophie/Sonia Kovalevsky. We have chosen the latter variation of her name since we developed this book inspired by the Sonia Kovalevsky Days for girls in math which originated within the Association of Women in Mathematics of the United States of America.

Sonia Kovalevsky Days

These days are part of series of the Association of Women in Mathematics (AWM). For more than twenty years Sonia Kovalevsky Days have been organized and sponsored by AWM and held at colleges and universities throughout the country. Sonia Kovalevsky Days (SK Days) consist of a program of workshops, talks, and problem-solving competitions for female high school and middle school students and their teachers, both women and men. At UIC together with James Unwin we run anual Sonia Kovalevsky days, for which we have prepared the material listed below which we are currently converting into a book.
9. Billiards, with James A. Unwin (2018).
8. Non-orientable surfaces, with James A. Unwin (2018).
